Act 3 / 5

The Cable Forest

The Weather Clerk and the Missing Noon10 pictures

The trail dives beneath the sea into a forest of instrument cables. A leviathan map guards the clock hearts that keep the ocean wheel turning.

  1. The clerk descends through an underwater forest of luminous weather cables rooted in the seafloor.
    Field 03.01

Below the waves, every forecast has roots.

  2. A round submersible shaped like a millstone rolls between cable trunks with the clerk visible through a brass porthole.
    Field 03.02

Kvarnstone 7 was rated for pressure, not omens.

  3. Coral barometers open and close like flowers while schools of silver fish trace their pressure readings.
    Field 03.03

The reef kept a cleaner ledger than the surface.

  4. Warm red and cold cyan currents travel on a vast underwater conveyor of pipes, vanes and glass thermometers.
    Field 03.04

Heat had been sorted into somebody else's order.

  5. A choir of weather buoys rings brass bells above the water, each buoy singing a different warning into the deep.
    Field 03.05

The buoy choir knew the tune but not the conductor.

  6. A leviathan made from folded maps and compass lines coils around a knot of undersea cables.
    Field 03.06

Every border became a scale on its back.

  7. The clerk loosens the great cable knot while the map leviathan watches with one enormous cartographic eye.
    Field 03.07

The knot was not locked. It was frightened.

  8. Dozens of brass clock hearts drift free from the opened cables, pulsing with different local hours.
    Field 03.08

The stolen noons had been kept alive.

  9. The clerk fits one clock heart into a gigantic ocean wheel and the stalled currents begin turning again.
    Field 03.09

The ocean remembered how to carry heat.

  10. Glowing strings rise from the restored ocean wheel through dark water toward a needle-like tower above the clouds.
    Field 03.10

All strings led upward. The clerk followed.
